I finally found some heart-pounding moments between Luo Yunxi and Song Yi in episode 16 today. I hope it gets better. There are a lot of similarities between “Follow Your Heart” and “My Wife’s Double Life.” Both MLs are cops in the capital city. Both fathers were framed to be criminals. They both have a nemesis who would follow them around town to nail their mistakes or to take over the credit for their accomplishments. Both sets of leads met each other when they were young and went through disasters together. They both met each other years later without recognizing each other. But Luo Yunxi’s character seemed to spend all the day following the FL as her back and call while the ML from “My Wife’s Double Life” actually got some real work done (solving cases and catching criminals.). Both “Follow Your Heart” and “My Wife’s Double Life” have really nice songs. I particularly like Luo Yunxi’s “Hanging on a Heart”, Jiang Dunhao’s “Relationship” and The8’s “Time Spoken In Ink.”

2024 has been a let down in cdrama-land for sure imo. I think the only one I've seriously watched was JOL2. So I've been spending my time rewatching some oldie but goldies, notably Mars! I believe you have a video on Mars on bilibili but it's all in Chinese. Would you consider making a video on Mars so that I can send to my English speaking friends as a plug for this hidden gem 🥹

Could someone PLEASE teach period drama actors to smile spontaneously? Thank you😊. A funny laugh like Zhang Hao Wei's in A Mai's drama is extremely attractive, as is Deng Lun's ironic and tender smile and even the NATURALITY of the couple's relationship in Blossoms in Adversity. Relax a little: yesterday's heroes ALSO smiled...SPONTANEITY is the word.

true, 'the double' final scene was like, what? so anticlimactic and kind of boring. it totally didn't fit with the rest of the drama, as an ending. Like someone bought some candy fluff and stuck it on pizza. Weird. And the fact that you have to pay extra to watch the attached-on finale where they are a happy couple??? Bugger that. Such poor form YOUKU.

I'm on ep 37 of The Double and I'm finding it very hard to continue, because it's dragging sooooo much. This drama could have been 20 episodes and it would have been better. Also, I kept expecting more development and more scenes between the two leads but they have become so boring... the princess and the former husband have more scenes and excitement than them :/ finally, after a while you also notice the not-so-good acting behind the eye candy of the two leads. The princess is the only really good actress in the main cast...

Oh my God, I can’t believe why literally just watched all that I’ve missed so much content of yours and trust me you’re gonna get sick of my voice my name sorry by the end of it because I can’t imagine witnessing anyone that is so up-to-date and can translate all of that information into a 25 minute video on things that we love but we don’t speak Chinese or read Chinese so we’re never gonna know that stuff without people like you. I think you knocked out of the park. I think you’re absolutely incredible and I can’t wait to look at some more of your stuff and I hope this is the content you just keep bringing out because, you’re an absolute star. My opinion I’ve loved Chinese Japanese Korean station stuff always since I couldn’t remember being into things and you just gave me 25 minutes to the best so thank you thank you.

I have been a subscriber of yours for a long time, yet an aspect of your comments on "Follow Your Heart" really surprised me and threw me off guard. Would it really be your instinct to make jokes out of neurological problems? Face-blindness (prosopagnosia) and brain injury are serious health issues. I haven't heard this come up in your other videos, but perhaps it just didn't catch my attention quite like this did. Do you find pairings of people with other illnesses and disabilities funny, unique, or as otherwise having high "comedic" potential due to the nature of their illnesses? What about a blind and deaf couple, or one mixing cerebral palsy and paraplegia? Would you feel comfortable laughing at one of those pairings struggling in some scenario that a writer set up in order to "milk" their issues? Where do you draw the line, and why are neurological issues on the wrong side of it?

I will definitely agree that its super lazy to resign a character to one color in different shades as though the color is their whole personality. I do think in dramas with sects its appropriate to have a clan's colors be a certain thing, to make sure the audience follows who is from what group, but lets face it. In real life, if you go to a country or state; youre not going to see everyone wearing red every day of their lives.

A live action of the popular donghua Link Click was also released! Tbh I haven't watched the whole thing yet, but I plan to because I surprisingly really liked the first episode and the production. The plot has differences, like important differences, but it doesn't bother me since the original animation is too good and is still ongoing, so this way nothing takes away its protagonism. Also, this adaptation feels like an alternate universe, which doesn't feel so illogical since it's a time travel show where parallel timelines are canon. Still not sure what I think of the actor who plays the role of Lu Guang, but I'll hold off on my opinions until I watch all the episodes. For now I'll just say I really appreciate how well they recreated the 'Time Photo Studio'. It's magical to see it in real life because it's literally the same house. I even wonder if it's a house that already existed before the donghua.

The double. 😂🎉if the end is to good their business would run out. They need to keep produce more drama. It is good ending for people to look something more. If the drama is addictive and perfect than people would not look for other. The ending they should let ml and fl marry and all characters represent at their wedding would be amazing but it would be perfect end and happy. People likely keep watch the show and other drama would not gain people.

I posted some thoughts on tale of rose drama a few days ago. Since then I watched the full drama through WeTV express and just finished last night. Just wanted to share some updated thoughts and impressions on the drama (without mentioning any specific spoilers). After finishing all 38 episodes, I’ve found that the tone of the drama is quite sombre overall. I think the music and cinematography played a substantive part in creating this feel. It’s not the sort of sombre that is nostalgic or wonderful, it is more placid. And overall leaving me as the viewer feeling a bit “ya yi” / “yu men” and a bit oppressed. Not sure if anyone else has that feeling? I enjoyed the storytelling of Rose’s life, her career, family and romantic relationships and as mentioned previously I really enjoyed Liu Yi Fei’s acting. I think she did a great job at depicting certain emotional states at various points in her life - it felt realistic. However, in terms of the actual romantic relationships themselves, I found it hard that both her first love (zhao guodong) and second love (Fang zhiwen) had difficulty moving on from Rose after fifteen to eighteen years later. I understand sometimes when you date someone you really like or are deeply attracted to, then they may last in your memories, there is always a special place in your heart for them. But I would have thought that after fifteen to eighteen years, these men would have moved on (ok to still hold a special place for Rose in their heart as she is so beautiful and captivating) but I would have thought they may have emotionally moved on. In particular, roses first relationship with zhang guodong didn’t have much substance, they met through work relations, felt strong were deeply attracted to each other, dated for less than a year and then split. It’s quite common, particularly for decent looking young girls and guys to date in their early twenties and find each other extremely attractive, and build a bond together but due to immaturity in handling conflicts and lack of understanding to split. It seems somewhat unrealistic that zhao guodong isn’t able to fully move on after eighteen years when their relationship didn’t have a whole heap of substance to begin with, I think even years later he’s still very allured by her beauty, personality and demeanour, but that’s it, nothing that much deeper? As for Fan Zhi Wen’s character I can understand why he longs for Rose a bit more as they shared more years together with various trials and challenges and shared a martial bond. Rose did play a big part at least in his life, from helping him start up his company to having his child. I can understand his sense of loss when the marriage ended particularly as that’s the very last thing he wanted. But his insecurity, which causes him to be overly controlling, was the very thing that led to his fears playing out (aka Rose leaving him). He is a flawed character but I can somewhat understand why he still can’t move on from Rose. After Huo Zheng Hua (Rose’s third love interest) departure, I felt the whole drama’s tone became more and more placid. I think the drama did want to convey that Rose is able to live happily on her own for the next six / seven years of her life, be a successful art gallery curator / manager, raise her daughter etc but not sure whether it’s the music or acting (or both) I can’t seem to feel a sense of joy or happiness coming out of Rose in those years. Yes, she rides a motorbike, which conveys a sense of adventure seeking and independence but she seems so sad. I think her desire to study and get a pilots licence conveys a sense of boredom with her. She has a lot of time with her kid almost in middle school now, her art gallery venture is going well so to fill her time she does random things like getting a pilot licence. Instead of conveying a sense of an adventurous spirit it seems to me she is quite bored with her, and lowkey dissatisfied and not so happy and is doing these externally adventurous looking things to satisfy her cravings for excitement and freshness. There’s nothing wrong with that, but I just can’t sense her internal happiness and deep down being happy at where she is in life. I feel a sense of emptiness. This might be an odd take, but my take on Rose’s eighteen years, is that who you marry is quite important. Her and fang zhi wen are not compatible. Yes, he is controlling and coercive and she craves freedom - but I think both parties lack true fundamental respect and understanding for each other so very difficult to reach a “middle ground” in any conflict. For any one that has been married, a lot of the times conflicts are like pitching tents and through understanding and communication may need to move the tent or goal post. I think given they are not really compatible, and Rose married him that sets the scene to her not so happy or “xing fu” life after. Had she married someone more compatible and improved in her own maturity, then perhaps she could have a more long lasting and fulfilling family life AS WELL as a career in the art gallery - sort of like her best friends character who was able to do both. So I think who you marry is important. Even though Rose has sense of freedom and adventure and is able to “coordinate her own life’s trajectories” as she puts it, I do think a regret is not having that fulfilling family life with her own family due to the broken marriage. It also seems there is a void in her life in the last seven years after Wallace Huo’s characters departure and it’s not convincing that she picked herself up again. Her life, despite her incredible beauty, into her 40s seems like it will be quite the same old as in her late 30s. She does respect her “inner heart’s” desires but I feel like more understanding, willingness to forgive, tolerate and love and looking inward for self growth is required if she to have a successful relationship or marriage in the future. Otherwise, if she is still more impulsive or just following her heart, I find it hard to believe it will last long as marriage is such a long journey and without forgiveness and accepting the flaws in her future partner it’s hard to continue this long journey together. Overall, towards the end of the drama I felt her life as a single mum to be quite placid, monotonous in a sense and I do find her overall state to be quite sombre. I don’t think this is bad or anything but just saying had she made a different choice in marriage partner, and worked on accepting her respective partners’ flaws, perhaps she would have a more fulfilling family life and more enriched and happy love life too. Pretty-ness is good but depends on how you let us interact with your overall identity. Is it your whole identity? Is that where you get the entitlement to not care and just follow your heart? What is the consequence of doing so, I.e only following heart? The heart can be deceptive and fickle a lot of the times…. Cynically I think her beauty is also one of the reasons that makes her feel a sense of entitlement that whenever she doesn’t love anymore, she is willing to move on and end the relationship. However, when you think of it holistically - who is prefect? Nobody. Yes, having romantic partners / guys that are selfish, or controlling are very very bad traits. But I believe every person is susceptible to falling or exhibiting these bad traits when we are immature, insecure, damaged, or otherwise just broken. Learning to bring up these concerns and issues, talking it through, whilst respecting the other person (who may not be worthy of respect) is difficult but I think important. I’m not saying Rose should have stayed in her marriage, I just would have liked to see her examine herself and have some more inward introspection before ending each relationship, that’s all, to signify her growth. The depiction of rose and her relationship with her family is also quite precious, a part I enjoyed. After eighteen years, going to Shanghai and back to Beijing, I’m glad she still has a family by her side, making raising her daughter as a single parent far less daunting and I’m glad she has that support throughout her daughters time of growing up.

I like your take, Ms :) Have just finished 12 episodes. Didn't like her selfish behaviour in ruining the painting she did on the wall at all! Hmm... almost like tempting Karma to punish her with the next guy. I thought to myself, huh, the next one is going to be a living nightmare! The way she walked out on Guodong & shutting him off like that deserves punishment.

I followed you because i like the way you analyze Chinese drama and i still do. But i beg to disagree with your remarks about The Tale of Rose. I have not read the book so i can not compare the drama to it. I believed the drama can stand on its own merit, I like Tale of Rose because it showed how a woman became more alive and wiser after each relationships. She did not lose herself in the relationships neither has she become jaded. She is also financially independent and free to pursue choices that are not typical to women favored by society. She showed her vulnerability and at the same time gave herself to loving relationships without reservations as shown by her relationships with Fang Jiamin. For me she is living a very meaningful life. :)

Honestly I agree with your opinions on Follow Your Heart. I was bored from the very first episode, and don't actually know how they are gonna make 40 episodes work. It's a shame because I love Tang Dynasty and the shooting style of the drama, but the plot is draggy, and while the actors themselves are very good, I feel no nothing for the characters.

Leo Luo YunXi really needs to work on his figure. I believe he is intentionally keeping a slim figure but as you mentioned, for some characters it requires more of a muscle toned figure to be taken seriously. I feel like he is about to break any moment, I don't deny he looks graceful but it's impacting the delivery of his character.

I watched Tale of Rose and I quite liked it. I had to skip the 2nd guy because it was too stressful to watch a psychological thriller unfold within what was a slice-of-life coming of age story. I think the confusing time setting made the story feel more timeless, sort of like how I felt about Sex Education's setting. The story feels like moder but it's set in the past with little emphasis on that fact that it's set in the past. The time period is just set dressing. I quite liked it. If set in the modern day, it would lose it's charm. I do think that it doesn't say anything new in the landscape of feminism today, but I do think that it's refreshing to find a distinctly feminist show that isn't really trying to make a specific point that is ambiguous enough to give you food for thought. Most of all the character writing was consistent and the plot made sense, which since I was watching this while watching the Double was a breath of fresh air.

Thank you so much @AvenueX, for still giving us weekly videos. I honestly love your reviews and comments and I really appreciate you and your time to watch these videos to make these reviews. I personally have started becoming bored of Chinese dramas for a while now too. I used to complain a few years back about why there wasn't a lot of ancient Chinese or costume dramas and would binged watch any costume Chinese dramas I came across, but now I see them everywhere, and it's really about quantity rather than quality of the film work. Even the costumes themselves are not as vibrant and beautiful as they used to be and the plot is just.... Nonetheless, I shared many of your opinions and just wanted to let you know I can relate and you're doing a wonderful job and is an awesome person.

there are all types of women in all times. they had independent women in the past, they have dependent women in the present. being dependent is an available choice, and frewill allows people to choose it. true, in the past there were societal barriers to independence, but still, there would have been cracks in the barriers. I am fed up of all this aggressive forcing of 'ideal, independent" women characters in fiction. i may like independence for myself, but let the fictional characters make their own choices. even a female character who lives by the traditional values and lifestle is still an acceptable character. she could turn out to be the most interesting character. we do not need to be offended, or scared, of even fictional female characters that belong to the past. a person is particularly unimaginative and unintelligent if he or she cannot relate to other times and cultures

Out of the 4 here I only watched the double. I enjoyed it, it was fun and the chemistry between the two leads is great. I like that they both have their goals and they respect and support each other while they do it. I agree with the criticisms though that you need to ignore a lot of logic though. The war part at the end was unnecessary.. Having to pay to watch the ending early should not be allowed so I just went to 🏴‍☠ I also really don't like ambiguous endings in these cases. You should not have to put out "extra" mini episode to give the viewers a happy ending.

I have watched the legend of heroes for 7 episodes so far and although i liked huang rong as a character i enjoy watching on screen more than other characters i still don't know if i should continue watching this drama... Other than huang rong i absolutely despise that wanyan/yang kang's character. His character progression (or i should say regression) was really weird. Or maybe it is too complicated for me to understand it lol. No hate to the actor who is playing wanyan/yang kang but this character... is just... unlikable to me. Also, I don't like the cp of him and the other chick.

You are so right on about follow your heart. Im getting bored at 10 ep. Leo is far too thin (so is songyi but he is less and less appealing.). Im hoping Dashing Youth will equal Blood of Youth. No hope for anything else.

I agree with your views. The double is ok but too long...so damn many closeups watering it to 40 episodes and so un original. Legend looks awful and i think the male lead is extremely dull.

I kind of can’t watch Tale of Rose because it gives me violent flashbacks lol. I don’t need to watch all my mistakes played out again in a drama.. my mental health said no, but I’m still sad to miss a Liu Yifei drama in which she’s so beautiful in.

I watched every episode of 'Rose'. It was interminable. When will it end I kept asking myself. Then it ended. I felt it was like a banquet without any substance. There isn't much to say about it except it didn't do justice to the talent the company hired. Two actors absolutely wasted were Wallace Huo and Kenny Lin. Two of my favourites. Mr Lin was especially badly treated by the production. What they did to Mr Huo I don't want to talk about!

There may have been one, but truly this year has been a huge disappointment for me. When I first started to watch K and C drama I was enchanted. The stories were old but told in a refreshing way. Who could forget the dramas shown from 2014 until 2020. I won't list them because they are so well-known that it isn't necessary! The only two I can remember liking this year is the return of Liu Shi Shi. Heroes with the actor from Fox Volant Side story. Have all the talent that once stunned the world disappeared? I don't think there is anyone in the new batch who has studied the 'greats' from the past. This is how one learns. Do they think that those who came before have nothing of interest to say? Today's world is different from just 4 years ago, but every era is different. This one is just crammed into a smaller timeline. When I started to watch C and K drama I stopped watching films from other cultures. Now I search and search through streaming services (both Asian and from the west) and nothing appeals. Have I become too old? I don't think so.

Dear AvenueX. Enough is indeed enough. I really do not know why you persist in this CDrama blogger lark since you find the current Chinese film industry output to be so below par on so many aspects. Why not review the Canadian theatre or film scene instead? Canada is after all now your place of residence is it not? By all accounts, you have successfully escaped the pressures, crap & mediocrities of present day China but still lament the unavailability of your "idealized" Chinese cultural "magic". That said, I very much doubt, however, if the body shaming, the hyper negative remarks directed at specific groups (prime example, the so called idols who are just beautiful people who diligently use God given attributes, such as they are, to make a living) will go down well in the Canadian context. Your blog obviously attracts the like minded, the rest will wisely stay away. I believe you think yourself an ambassador of Chinese culture & values. After exposure to your blog output, the one sure take away is that Chinese culture has its merits, but definitely cannot be deemed "superior" to other world cultures. I, for one, was particularly disheartened to discover that "Povertà d’Animo" is so much a feature of the Chinese mindset.

I'm sorry you're going through drama-malaise. I hope you'll regain some of that funny enthusiasm you had a few years back. I enjoyed your past videos analyzing phrases or puns. They were certainly my cup of tea. For myself, 2024 hadn't been that bad. There were a few gems that took hold of me and in a way, it's good that they come once every months. It gives me a breather to sit back and rewatch, play around, catch dialogue, laugh at the BTS scenes and read reviews. IOW, I want to enjoy my drama through and through and not just snack and go to the next course. Most of the dramas that had me chasing like an addict, you didn't like much or at all, so there's that. Case in point: The Double. I thought it was just a solid drama, filled with twists and turns and the dialogue was witty and sexy because of the pun-filled buns. I ate and ate and ate. I just loved the chemistry of the two leads. Every time they were together, their dialogue sizzled with tension and double entendres. So now I'm at the stage of snacking on BTS and reviews and replaying favorite scenes. This is all so satisfying to me while I wait for Lost You Forever, a book I've loved for years and the second part of which I'm dreading to watch. But I've never liked that ending LOL. Best to you that there will be a few gems for you too.
